Landscape Restoration Works Stepped Up

November 2008 saw the beginning of the most intensive phase of garden works which will continue until April 2009.

November 2008 saw the beginning of the most intensive phase of garden works which will continue until April 2009.

Western Lawn

This includes the restoration of the Western Lawn which slopes from the house down to the river. Here William Kent’s 18th masterpiece of a naturalistic styled garden providing sweeping views from the house across the river, is being revived with the selective removal of trees and railings at the water’s edge.

This removal is now complete.

New railings

On the opposite side of the river new railings await their final coat of paint and chestnut fences are protecting areas of newly seeded grass beside the river walk. These will be removed once the grass is established.

Formal hedges

Behind and in front of the House a considerable amount of work is taking place to reduce the scale of the formal hedges which have become much taller and broader than intended. Some hedges will be realigned to more accurately reflect their historic position and restore sight lines to garden features.
